BIOGRAPHY
Thierry Omeyer was voted as best goalkeeper of all time in a 2010 vote organised by the International Handball Federation - and few would argue with that.
Omeyer played professionally for over 20 years, winning all major international competitions, the EHF Champions League four times, and, among other trophies, 10 French championships.
Omeyer began handball as a junior in his hometown of Cernay in Alsace, and stayed in the area for his first professional signing at Sélestat HB. By 2000 he had attracted the attention of Montpellier Handball as it became one of France’s top clubs, winning several championships as well as the EHF Champions League in 2003.
After six years with Montpellier, Omeyer moved to THW Kiel for his only experience outside France. During the seven seasons with the Bundesliga side Omeyer won a further three Champions League trophies as well as six Bundesliga titles and six German Cups. He returned to Montpellier briefly, but finished his career with five years at Paris Saint-Germain - alongside several of his former Montpellier teammates.
For France, Omeyer played 358 matches, scoring six goals as well as making innumerable saves. He won his first title at the 2001 IHF Men’s World Championship, and his last at the 2017 World Championship, with a further three world titles, two Olympic titles and three EHF EURO titles in between - as well as Olympic silver, two world bronze medals and one European bronze.
Omeyer was named in a number of All-star Teams during his career, including at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games, 2009, 2011 and 2015 World Championships, and EHF EURO 2006. He was also named MVP of the 2015 World Championship, and named as IHF Player of the Year in 2008.
Omeyer is currently general manager at PSG.
