SUMMARY: Ikast make history at EHF Finals Women
It's finals day at the EHF Finals Women 2023 in Graz, and Ikast Handbold have become champions after overcoming tough opponents Nykøbing Falster Håndbold. Earlier, BV Borussia 09 Dortmund beat Thüringer HC for third place.
We never thought we were going to make it to the EHF Finals, because we lost two of the first games in the group. We’re so happy that we could make it here and now we stand with a silver medal and that’s really big for us.
It feels so amazing. We lost on the first and second time, and we got it this year, and I’m so relieved and so happy about it.
Nykøbing's good energy from the semi-final arrived with them to the final, having a great start with a strong defence. You've rarely seen Ikast this season struggling this much in the attack and Cecilie Greve's saves are not helping either. Nykøbing's strength declined near the end of the first half which Ikast took advantage of and closed it to only one. It's a high-paced game and it will be interesting to see if both teams will be able to stay on the same level. Thirty minutes to go to find out who the new EHF European League Women champions are.
I’m really happy I could help the team with many saves today, but it was at the end really a team performance. I’m so proud of this team, after the difficult match yesterday, that we showed this today
We did the same mistakes that we did already yesterday. We had a good defence, but we had so many missed shots and too much technical mistakes that they immediately punish you.
What an amazing match in the battle for the third place. Even though Dortmund are leading by two at half-time, they will not have it easy. Thüringer once again found a new energy and closed the gap after trailing by five. And the goalkeepers have the main word. Amazing EHF Excellence Awards nominee Yara ten Holte was absolutely amazing in the first 30 minutes, stopping 14 THC attempts. Nicole Roth has a smaller number (six) but made crucial saves for a comeback.
