SUMMARY: Nykøbing and Ikast set for all-Danish final
The EHF Finals Women 2023 get underway on Saturday with two Danish-German semi-finals. Can Ikast Handbold use the lessons of the last two EHF Finals to make it to the trophy match? Will Thüringer HC or Nykøbing Falster Håndbold continue their march from the first qualification round to the final? Or is it Dortmund's day?
Join us for running coverage of the build-up to the semi-finals and all the action from the Raiffeisen Sportpark in Graz.
Today again I’ve experienced why I don’t like this rule with seven against six. It’s a fight in defence, always majority, and then you have to have a little bit of luck that you get easy possessions when they miss, that you can score into the empty goal – we didn’t have that many opportunities today. We didn't find means in the offence, we took too much the 5-1 against one. But we remained in the game. Then it comes to penalties. It is a little bit a lottery, and their goalkeeper stopped three out of five. It’s a deserved win.
We talked in the locker room about just giving so much more sprit and more fight, and they fight against us, we have to fight back. We did that way more in the second half and our speed was way more better in the second half as well. We did a great job and tomorrow we should just do it from the start so we don’t make it so close.
Dortmund and Nykøbing were giving their best to make a break in, what seems to be, a very similar way. After a high-paced start, we saw mistakes from both sides but with yet another brilliant goalkeeper performance today, this time by Yara ten Holte, BVB took a four-goal lead ahead of the second half. Are we going to have the Danish final if Nykøbing makes a comeback or will BVB continue the German dominance? We still have 30 minutes to go with many more fast breaks and strong defences, while clapping to the rhythm of the fans' drums in Raiffeisen Sportpark.
We did a big difference in the defence. We were very strong, we had a strong goalkeeper performance, and everyone really played their best today.
Although we conceded 17 goals in the first half our defence was pretty good, I’m really satisfied with the defence. But I cannot be satisfied with our offence. We played not good enough, we had a lot of technical mistakes which left Ikast in a position where they could control the empty goal. Also we missed so many free shots from the wings today.
Even though it seemed THC found the right recipe for Ikast through strong defence at the beginning of the match, the Danish side started their engines 10 minutes in, making their fans happy. When the opponent's goalkeeper Jessica Ryde is at 60 per cent, unfortunately, you can't dream of ending Ikast's unbeaten streak. What's worse, THC scored only five field goals, the rest were courtesy of Nathalie Hendrikse from the seven-metre line. Despite trailing by seven, THC's loyal fans keep on cheering, drumming and having fun in the stands.
I was really surprised by the nomination, because wen you look at all the goalkeepers who are nominated I’m the youngest and there are some goalkeepers I look up to. I’m really proud to be between their names. I don’t expect anything but it’s already a really big honour to be nominated.
