Learn Handball, launched in 2016, already contains a wealth of resources for coaches with tips and tricks from many of the world's top players, including Mathias Gidsel, Nora Mørk and Uwe Gensheimer. Now, together with Appelgren, the app is expanding its content aimed at goalkeeper development.
Appelgren has filmed videos covering 17 dedicated goalkeeping exercises, in which he breaks down his own training to help coaches better understand the goalkeeper role. The new videos are available to all users of the Learn Handball app.
The Swede said it was crucial for coaches to have a good grounding in the skills which goalkeepers need to perform their role on the court.
"“It’s very, very important to give goalkeepers this specific kind of training. Passing, shooting and things like that are something everyone are doing and they’re great for every position, but goalkeepers need this technical part to learn the movements, develop and be stimulated by it. I’ve felt that it has been extremely important for me," Appelgren said.
“I came to handball as a football goalkeeper, and I already had some of the basics. The techinique is very different, so that was something I had to learn quite quickly, thanks to the support of coaches who had been goalkeepers themselves and had the right knowledge.”
